This Year's Model Updates:

Only minor changes are made to Chevrolet's bread-and-butter Silverado pickup for 2002. Some options packages have been revamped for easier ordering and all extended-cab models now come standard with a four-speed automatic transmission, with the manual no longer available.

Pros:
  • Roomy extended cab models, strong V8 engines, available composite bed, disc brakes at all four corners, optional traction control.
Cons:
  • Cheap interior materials, sketchy build quality.

  • As good as it gets !!!!!!!!!! - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I just traded in my cadillac for a Z71 4WD 1500 LT. Wow what a truck! I test drove the ford lariat, dodge, and the Tundra, essentially the chevy kicks thier butts hands down. I drove it from SF to Reno and back. Now I know what it means to feel the force. This truck has loads of power, it is easy to drive, and rides essentially like a cadillac. It rides solid like my porsche which I am thinking of selling so I can buy another chevy for myself since my wife will not let me drive it, it is her truck now.

This truck was trouble free until the transmission gave out. Traded it in three days later, new tranny and all since I refuse to own a vehicle that requires major work with only 51,000 easy miles. I also found the handling kind of loose although that may be typical of this large a vehicle. Otherwise the truck did well.

  • Good work truck - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

This is a good work truck with fuel economy as stated on the dealer invoice. The 4800 engine has very good acceleration for a truck. The transmission shifts smooth and the transmission tow / haul selection mode is a good feature. The interior has cab noise that seems a little loud. Ride and handling is good loaded or unloaded. First complaint is the cab mounting bolts to the frame were loose and the dealer had to re-torque them. Second complaint is the anti lock brakes activate at speeds below five mph and the brakes then do not work at all. There is now a recall for this problem as stated by the NHTSA.

  • Nice truck but watch for flaws - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I have the 4.8L version of the Silverado. This model suits my needs just fine since I dont tow or haul on a regular basis. I currently have about 39K miles as of 10/04. The interior of the truck is nicely put together. The seats are comfortable and there is plenty of leg and head room. The stock Goodyear Wrangler STs are sub-par to say the least. They were bald at 33K miles. I have had no major issues with the truck other than a constant "ticking" noise which started at approximately 20K miles. I was told by GM and my dealership that it is a common characteristic of their new breed of engines and that there is no harm to the engine itself. Im not so sure of that. . .

  • Could/Should be better. - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Gas mileage leaves a lot to be desired maybe due to the rear end ratio of 3.73 I could only order higher not lower. I do not pull anything. 3.42 would have been better. Has an annoying shake when shifting from first to second.

my grandpa bought his 02 for 3,100 bucks couple years ago since then it has had no issues at all still runs great only thing it does burn alittle bit but not to much have to say this truck is really fun to drive only thing that i would say is the ride quality could be improved a bit kinda bouncy

  • This is the worst truck I have ever had - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

This truck is a joke as far as I am concerned. It has a terrible clunking noise when up shifting into second gear and also down shifting. The dealership has checked this out and I have a document from GM that says this is normal clunking. (Did not clunk into gear when I bought it). Tough to resell now. Also now when cold starting there is clattering going on under the hood. This goes away after a few minutes but again the dealership says this is normal clattering. HMM!! did not clatter when I bought it. I will not buy another GM truck as long as I live.

  • Superior to others - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Always wanted a black Chevy 4x4, finally got it. I love this truck. It rides great, pulls everything I ask it to, and has a ton of room. The Chevy engines are superior to the Ford and Dodge, and Toyota isnt even an option. Ive got 68,000 miles and have never put a dime into it, other than routine maintenance.

  • Reliable - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Never a malfunction of any components.
